Interview with KIM ROBY….Too Much of a Good Thing

Other works include: A Taste of Reality, Casting the First Stone, It’s a Thin Line, Here and Now, and Behind Closed Doors

1. When did you realize that you were a very good writer?

2. Where does your inspiration come from to write?

I am inspired by people I know, national news topics, and when I wrote IT'S A THIN LINE, I based the Sydney character on myself. I wanted to share my own personal experience regarding the care taking of my mother who was stricken with a benign brain tumor. Watching my mom deteriorate and then ultimately losing her in 2001 was the most painful experience I've ever had to face and writing about it helped me tremendously. It was such great therapy. I also wanted to portray the very close mother/daughter relationship that my mom and I shared. In addition, I tend to write about issues I feel strongly about, and those I believe are not addressed as often as they should be, i.e. corruption within the church, domestic violence, and modern-day discrimination.

3. You've written some great novels, which one of your novels is your favorite and why?

4. What male/female author(s) would you say have influenced you as a writer?

5. In your latest novel Too Much of a Good Thing which character did you have the most fun creating, and why?

Hands down, I'd have to say Curtis Black. The reason: He never ceases to amaze me. He is extremely intelligent and charismatic, but at the same time, he can be ruthless and uncaring. It's fun creating a character that readers love to hate. There is so much room for creativity, because Curtis is capable of doing just about anything.

6. Are any of the characters in your book a reflection of you or some of your experiences?

Yes, as I mentioned earlier, I based the characters Sydney and Delores on my mom and myself in IT'S A THIN LINE. I also like to add bits and pieces of my own experiences, likes, dislikes, discoveries, etc.

7. What do you hope readers will remember the most from reading this book?

That they must spend less time worshiping another human being who is standing in the pulpit and spend more time focusing on God. I hope they realize how important it is to build their own personal relationship with Him and read His Word. I also hope readers walk away with the understanding that too much of anything isn't good for anyone.

8. If you could be one of the characters in the book, who would it be?

I guess I'd have to say Tanya, Curtis's ex-wife because she finally had the courage to stand up to Curtis, leave him, and find another husband who genuinely loves her and treats her wonderfully. She decided that enough was enough and I admire her for doing that.

9. Will there be sequels to any of your other books?

Probably not, however, you will see characters from both TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING and A TASTE OF REALITY in my January 2005 novel.

10. Any sneak previews on upcoming projects you'd like to share?

In March 2004, Harper Collins/Avon will be releasing the trade paperback edition of A TASTE OF REALITY and then they'll be re-releasing my debut novel, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS in October 2004. In January 2005, you'll see the Reverend Curtis Black once again. After that, I'm not sure what will be next. I have three ideas, so I'll be deciding on one of them in the next few weeks.

I was told at an early age (elementary school) that I should consider a career in writing, but I never took that advice seriously. My sixth grade teacher used to say "Kim Lawson, why is that when I ask you the time, you always build me an entire clock?" He'd laugh because I could never write a one-paragraph theme the way he'd asked me to do. I always had to write one or more full pages for every assignment. He always smiled at the amount of detail I couldn't help giving. In, jr. high school, I was a writer for the school newspaper and a student news anchor. We had closed-circuit television and my journalism class produced a morning news program for the entire student body at the beginning of the school day. I was chosen to anchor the news for an entire semester. Then, when I entered college to study business administration, a couple of my professors also advised me to follow a career in writing. However, I didn't think more about writing a book until one of them asked for my permission to use a case study I'd written, as an example for her future students. At the time, I wasn't sure if it would be something fiction or nonfiction, but it wasn't long before I began outlining the story-line for BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

Actually, I'd have to say both CASTING THE FIRST STONE and TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING equally. Partly because of the excitement from readers regarding the protagonist, Pastor Curtis Black, and partly because I think it is important to discuss the truth about men or women in the ministry who are misleading innocent people---people who really do want to follow God's Word and live their lives right.

Terry McMillan, Connie Briscoe, Danielle Steel, Barbara Delinsky, E. Lynn Harris, Eric Jerome Dickey, and a few others.
